At the same time, agriculture and food systems remain central to the European Green Deal, the Bioeconomy Strategy and the transition toward more resilient regional economies. According to European Commission data, the EU generates more than 59 million tonnes of food waste annually, while agriculture remains one of the largest users of water, land and biological resources. Large quantities of agricultural residues, manure, processing side streams and organic waste remain underutilised despite their strong potential for circular valorisation, renewable energy production, biomaterials and regenerative farming applications. In Bulgaria specifically, circular transition in agriculture still faces major structural barriers despite strong biomass potential and growing innovation activity. Research from the Bulgarian bioeconomy and biomass assessment landscape shows that Bulgaria has significant agricultural and forestry resources, with approximately 47.1% agricultural land and 38% forest coverage, alongside large underutilised biomass streams from cereals, sunflower, vineyards, orchards and livestock systems. The country generates substantial residual biomass potential from agriculture, including over 6.6 million tonnes of agricultural residues annually according to S2BIOM assessments, alongside nearly 3.9 million tonnes biomass potential from unused lands. Livestock manure also presents major opportunities for biogas, biofertilisers and circular nutrient management, with estimated electricity generation potential exceeding 313 GWh annually. Despite these opportunities, the transition toward circular agrifood systems remains fragmented. Stakeholder mapping and field research conducted within Circular Voices identified recurring barriers across communication, regulation, financing, skills and innovation ecosystems. These include weak collaboration between universities and businesses, fragmented information flows, lack of practical education, insufficient cooperation between stakeholders, unclear regulatory processes and limited access to coordinated support mechanisms for circular innovation. Additional challenges include: limited visibility of successful circular practices lack of farmer-oriented communication approaches insufficient advisory and innovation systems low cooperation between public institutions and innovators shortages of skilled human resources and technical know-how inadequate platforms connecting startups, researchers, farmers and industry actors limited financial instruments adapted to circular business models At the same time, Europe is seeing rapid growth in circular bioeconomy startups, regenerative agriculture models, alternative proteins, agricultural biotechnology, precision agriculture and waste valorisation technologies. This creates strong opportunities for regional ecosystems capable of connecting research, entrepreneurship, financing and implementation capacity. Against this backdrop, Circular Voices Agrifood Talks brings together startups, researchers, farmers, investors, ecosystem builders and policymakers to explore how circular innovation can reshape the future of agri-food systems across Europe. At the same time, many companies, especially SMEs, startups, and growing innovative businesses, still struggle with the complexity, cost, and fragmented nature of ESG reporting frameworks. To address this challenge, Verimpact has launched a limited-time First Adopters Programme, providing selected organisations with free access to its ESG reporting platform and sustainability intelligence tools. As a partner of Agriventures, Verimpact is working to support companies navigating the transition toward more sustainable, transparent, and data-driven operations. What the First Adopters Programme Includes Selected organisations will receive: • Free 2025 ESG reporting aligned with GRI and IFRS S1 & S2 standards • Full access to the Verimpact Platform • Access to forecasting functionalities and advanced 3D visualisations • Direct collaboration with the Verimpact team • Priority access to upcoming platform features The initiative is designed for forward-looking organisations preparing for the next generation of sustainability reporting and compliance requirements. Why ESG Reporting Matters More Than Ever Across Europe, ESG requirements are rapidly becoming part of strategic business operations rather than standalone compliance exercises. However, for many organisations, the process remains inefficient and resource-intensive. According to Verimpact, many businesses today: • Pay excessive costs for ESG reporting • Spend months collecting and structuring sustainability data • Struggle to navigate multiple reporting frameworks • Produce reports that fail to support strategic decision-making This challenge is particularly significant for SMEs, agrifood businesses, startups, and scaling companies that often lack dedicated sustainability reporting teams or technical infrastructure. Turning Sustainability Data into Strategic Intelligence Rather than treating ESG reporting as a static compliance process, Verimpact aims to transform sustainability data into a strategic management tool. The platform is designed to help organisations generate: → Better insights→ Stronger risk understanding→ Actionable sustainability strategies This approach is becoming increasingly important as investors, corporates, financial institutions, and policymakers place greater emphasis on measurable sustainability performance and climate resilience. The event is part of the sixth edition of the forum, taking place between 1 and 5 June in Sofia, which has established itself as one of Europe’s most influential platforms for dialogue between institutions, business leaders, innovators, investors, and policymakers. The panel begins at 4:30 PM and will be structured as an interactive discussion under the theme Future of Food and Agriculture: Innovation and Digitalisation in Agriculture. The session will focus on the practical implementation of technologies, data-driven solutions, and innovation in the agri-food sector, alongside financing opportunities for innovative farmers, startups, and researchers. The discussion takes place at a pivotal moment for Europe’s agricultural and food sectors. In 2025, the European Commission proposed a new European Competitiveness Fund designed to consolidate multiple financial instruments and direct investment toward strategic sectors including biotechnology, digitalisation, agri-food systems, and sustainable industry. The fund is expected to play a major role in closing Europe’s innovation gap and accelerating technology adoption across the continent. Within this context, the panel will examine how the sector can move beyond concepts and pilot projects toward measurable real-world impact. The discussion will bring together international experts and innovators, including: • Blagoja Mukanov, Consultant at AgFutura Technologies with expertise in agricultural digitalisation and sustainable farming solutions • Georgios Karakatsanis, Founder and Director of EVOTROPIA, focused on innovation in agri-food systems • Sonsoles Jiménez Pérez, Managing Director of Alberizas and lecturer at University of Málaga, with an interdisciplinary background in economics and law • Veselina Stoyanova from MEALPROT, developing biotechnology solutions and circular agriculture models • Ivan Dragoev from ONDO Solutions, a company focused on digital technologies for farm management and irrigation The panel will be moderated by Mariya Hristova, expert in EU agricultural law, strategic planning, and innovation. The discussion will focus on one key question: how can innovation be implemented in real agricultural environments in ways that improve productivity, sustainability, resilience, and market access? The event will also provide opportunities for networking, financing discussions, partnerships, and insights into future European agricultural support mechanisms after 2027. Immediately following the panel, the first edition of Agriventures Awards 2026 will take place starting at 5:40 PM. The awards initiative, organised by Agriventures, connects farmers, innovators, investors, startups, corporations, and institutions while creating opportunities for financing, partnerships, and ecosystem growth through its platform: Agriventures Connect Platform The mission is clear: to build a bridge between ideas, financing, and the real-world implementation of solutions transforming the future of food and agriculture. Rising resource pressures, climate volatility, supply chain instability and shifting consumer expectations are forcing companies, researchers and policymakers to rethink how food systems operate. The linear model of production, consumption and waste is no longer economically or environmentally sustainable. The question is no longer whether circularity will become central to agri-food systems. The question is who will lead the transition. On 11 June, Circular Voices Agrifood Talks will bring together startups, researchers, investors, ecosystem builders and policymakers to explore how circular innovation can reshape the future of European agri-food systems. The event arrives at a critical moment for Bulgaria and the wider region. Despite significant agricultural potential, many countries in Southeast Europe still struggle to transform biological resources into high-value circular industries. Bulgaria alone generates millions of tonnes of agricultural residual biomass annually, while much of its raw production continues to leave the country without downstream value creation. At the same time, one of the biggest barriers identified across the ecosystem remains fragmentation between business, science and institutions. Challenges include weak communication across sectors, lack of collaboration between universities and industry, fragmented information and limited practical implementation support. This is precisely where initiatives like Circular Voices become strategically important. Circular Voices is not only focused on sustainability narratives. Its real value lies in creating operational bridges between entrepreneurship, research, funding and industry. The future of circular innovation depends less on isolated projects and more on interconnected ecosystems capable of scaling solutions across borders and sectors. The event agenda reflects this broader ambition. Discussions will focus on funding opportunities for circular solutions, successful collaboration models, cross-border partnerships and the practical barriers preventing wider adoption of circular innovation in agri-food systems. The panel discussion, “What is needed to scale circular innovation in agri-food systems?”, addresses some of the most urgent questions facing the sector today: How do startups move from pilot projects to market adoption? How can researchers commercialize innovation more effectively? What financing mechanisms are still missing? How can ecosystem builders create stronger regional collaboration? What role does consumer awareness play in accelerating circular transitions? These are not theoretical debates. Across Europe, circular business models are increasingly becoming linked to competitiveness, resilience and strategic autonomy. Companies capable of valorizing waste streams, improving resource efficiency and integrating bio-based innovation into their supply chains are likely to gain long-term advantages as regulations and markets continue evolving. For startups, the opportunity is especially significant. Circular innovation creates entirely new value chains across precision agriculture, food waste valorization, biomaterials, alternative proteins, regenerative agriculture and industrial biotechnology. Yet scaling these solutions requires access not only to capital, but also to strategic partnerships, testing environments, industrial infrastructure and regulatory understanding. That is why ecosystem-oriented events matter. Innovation rarely scales in isolation. It scales when researchers meet founders, when investors understand industry realities, when corporates become early adopters and when policymakers engage directly with entrepreneurial ecosystems. Circular Voices Agrifood Talks aims to create exactly this type of environment. Beyond presentations and panel discussions, the event creates space for strategic dialogue, partnership development and long-term collaboration between stakeholders working toward more resilient and resource-efficient agri-food systems. The transition toward circular agriculture and food systems will not happen through a single technology or institution. It will happen through stronger collaboration networks capable of connecting science, entrepreneurship, finance and industry into functioning ecosystems. And increasingly, the regions that build those ecosystems fastest will define the future competitiveness of Europe’s bioeconomy.
