EUIPO SME Fund 2026 is open - Boosting Agri-Food Innovation in Europe

Europe’s small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are the backbone of its agri-food economy — from family farms and food processors to agritech startups bringing cutting-edge solutions to market. Yet many of these innovators struggle with the cost
and complexity of protecting their ideas and brands across the EU.
That’s where the 2026 SME Fund, launched by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), becomes a strategic opportunity.
The SME Fund is a European Commission-backed grant scheme designed to help SMEs protect and leverage their intellectual property (IP) — such as trademarks, patents, designs, and plant varieties — by reimbursing a portion of the costs associated with securing those rights. It uses a voucher-based model, meaning approved applicants receive vouchers that cover part of their eligible expenses.
For 2026, the main vouchers include:
IP Scan & Enforcement: a pre-diagnosis and enforcement assessment of your IP strategy (90% reimbursed).
Trademarks & Designs: up to 75% reimbursed for brand and design protection.
Patents: up to 75% reimbursed for patent filing services.
Community Plant Varieties: reimbursement for plant variety protection — particularly relevant for seed producers and plant breeders.
Applications opened on 2 February 2026 and will continue until funds are spent (typically by year-end).
For entrepreneurs in the agri-food sector, IP isn’t just legal paperwork — it’s a business accelerator. Protecting a new crop variety, a precision farming sensor, a novel food product, or a brand that resonates across markets helps secure investment, enter export markets, and stand out among competitors.
This is especially crucial for agri-food startups and innovation hubs that often face fragmentation in EU markets and require strong legal frameworks to scale.
Without IP protection, investments in R&D or branding risk being copied or under-leveraged.
If you’re in the agri-food space, consider these steps to benefit from the SME Fund:
Assess Your IP Needs: List trademarks, plant varieties, patents, or design rights that can help protect your product or technology.
Plan Early: Funds operate on a “first come, first served” basis, so prepare your application early in the year.
Combine Supports: Use SME Fund vouchers together with sector-specific accelerators or EU calls (e.g. EIT Food, Horizon Europe) to build a stronger growth pathway — both legally and commercially.
Seek Guidance: IP advisers, national IP offices, or platforms like AgriVentures can help with application strategy and ecosystem matchmaking.
