European Commission Launches the Women in Farming Platform

The European Commission has launched the Women in Farming Platform, a new initiative aimed at strengthening the role of women in agriculture across the European Union. The platform invites individuals living in the EU and working in agriculture or agriculture related sectors to apply and become members.

The initiative aims to create a space for dialogue, cooperation and knowledge exchange between women farmers, entrepreneurs, researchers and professionals connected to the agricultural sector. Through the platform, participants will be able to connect with peers from different EU countries, share experiences and exchange best practices at both national and European levels.

Women play a crucial role in European agriculture by driving innovation, sustainability and diversification in rural economies. However, they remain underrepresented in leadership positions within the sector. Currently, women manage approximately 32% of farms in the European Union, and only 3% of farm holders are women under the age of 40. These figures highlight the need for stronger support mechanisms and networks to encourage greater participation of women in farming.
The Women in Farming Platform is part of the European Commission’s broader Vision for Agriculture and Food, which aims to strengthen the resilience, competitiveness and sustainability of the agricultural sector. The platform will serve as a forum where members can discuss common challenges, exchange practical solutions and contribute ideas that support the development of inclusive agricultural policies.
One of the core activities of the platform will be the creation of a mentoring network connecting experienced women farmers with those at earlier stages of their professional journey.
Mentoring activities will focus on practical and business oriented topics such as farm business planning, understanding operating costs, navigating agricultural markets, adopting innovation and technology, expanding farm activities beyond primary production, and improving marketing and promotion of farm products, including through digital channels.
The initiative also aligns with global efforts to recognize the role of women in agriculture. The United Nations has declared 2026 the International Year of the Woman Farmer, highlighting the importance of women in rural development and encouraging initiatives that improve their opportunities and address structural challenges.
Participation in the platform is open to individuals residing in the European Union who work in agriculture or in agriculture related fields. Interested candidates must submit their application by 30 April 2026.
Through this initiative, the European Commission aims to strengthen collaboration among women in agriculture, support knowledge sharing and contribute to a more inclusive and resilient European farming sector.
