Generational Renewal in European Agriculture: Empowering the Next Generation through Innovation and AgriVentures

Europe’s agricultural sector stands at a critical crossroads. With an ageing farming population and increasing pressures from climate change, market volatility, and technological transformation, the need to attract and empower a new generation of farmers has never been more urgent.

The European Commission’s strategy on generational renewal offers a forward-looking vision-one that aligns strongly with initiatives led by organizations like AgriVentures, working directly with young farmers and next-generation innovators in agriculture and dairy farming.

A New Vision for Young Farmers in Europe

At the heart of the EU’s agricultural policy lies a simple but ambitious goal: to make farming more accessible, attractive, and sustainable for future generations. Today, only around 12% of farmers in the EU are under the age of 40, while the average farmer is over 55 years old.
To address this imbalance, the EU has introduced a comprehensive strategy aiming to double the share of young farmers to around 24% by 2040.  This strategy is embedded within the broader Vision for Agriculture and Food, which seeks to ensure fair income, improve rural living conditions, and strengthen the long-term resilience of the agri-food sector.
The approach is holistic. It combines financial support under the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), improved access to land and credit, better training systems, and policies that facilitate farm succession between generation

Young people entering agriculture face multiple structural challenges. These include limited access to land, high investment costs, uncertain profitability, and lack of modern infrastructure in rural areas.

The EU strategy addresses these barriers through:
  • Targeted funding and subsidies for young and new farmers
  • Fairer land markets and improved access to financing
  • Training and advisory services, including digital and climate-smart agriculture
  • Stronger rural ecosystems, with better infrastructure, healthcare, and connectivity

Generational renewal is not only about replacing older farmers—it is about transforming agriculture into a modern, innovative, and entrepreneurial sector that attracts talent from diverse backgrounds.

The Role of Innovation and Community: AgriVentures

While policy frameworks provide the foundation, real transformation happens on the ground. This is where AgriVentures plays a key role.

AgriVentures supports young farmers and next-generation entrepreneurs by building a community-driven innovation ecosystem that bridges agriculture, technology, and business development. Its activities complement EU priorities by focusing on practical, scalable solutions.

1. Supporting Young Farmers and New Entrants
AgriVentures actively engages young people interested in agriculture by providing:
  • Access to mentorship and expert networks
  • Training in digital tools, farm management, and sustainability
  • Opportunities to participate in international delegations and innovation programs

This directly aligns with the EU’s emphasis on education, skills, and advisory systems as key drivers of generational renewal.

2. Accelerating Innovation in Dairy Farming
The dairy sector, a cornerstone of European agriculture, is undergoing rapid transformation. AgriVentures works with next-generation dairy farmers to:
  • Introduce data-driven farm management systems
  • Promote precision livestock farming technologies
  • Improve animal welfare and productivity through innovation

These efforts help young dairy farmers become more competitive, sustainable, and resilient—key objectives of EU policy.

3. Building Entrepreneurial Mindsets
Modern farming is no longer just production—it is entrepreneurship. AgriVentures empowers young farmers to:
  • Develop business models beyond traditional farming
  • Explore value-added products and short supply chains
  • Access funding opportunities, including EU programs

By fostering innovation and entrepreneurship, AgriVentures contributes to making agriculture a viable and attractive career path.

AgriVentures focuses on supporting agrifood startups, biotechnology innovation, and access to European funding for agriculture, while also helping entrepreneurs navigate the complex landscape of startup financing, venture capital, and research commercialization.

By strengthening connections between startups, research institutions, investors, and farmers, Agriventures contributes to building a stronger agricultural innovation ecosystem that can accelerate the transition toward sustainable agriculture and resilient food systems.
Through knowledge sharing, events, and ecosystem building, Agriventures helps ensure that promising agritech innovations can scale and reach farmers, food producers, and global markets.

Agriventures Joins SYSARM: Helping Europe’s Farmers

Every farmer already knows how to manage risk day to day — weather, prices, supply chains, you name it. What most don’t have is a way to see how all of those risks connect, and how a decision made today can come back to bite (or help) them two seasons from now. That’s the gap SYSARM is here to close, and Agriventures has just signed on as a core partner to help make it happen. On 27–28 May, our team — represented by Ivaylo Yankov — joined partners from Italy, Romania, Bulgaria and Poland in...

From Data to Impact: Innovation and Digitalisation Reshaping European Agriculture

At Green Transition Forum 6.0 in Sofia, four leading agrifood innovators tackled the hard questions about AI, biotechnology, EU funding gaps, and what it really takes to scale technology from lab to farm. European agriculture is under pressure from every direction — rising input costs, climate instability, tightening sustainability regulations, and a funding landscape that doesn't always match the pace of innovation. On June 4, 2026, at the main stage of Green Transition Forum 6.0 in Sofia,...
