GHG Protocol Sets First Global Rules for Land Emissions and Carbon Removals from 2027

The Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol, the world’s most widely used framework for corporate carbon accounting, has released its Land Sector and Removals (LSR) Standard — a landmark global guideline that will take effect from January 1, 2027.
For the first time, companies looking to track and report greenhouse gas emissions and carbon dioxide removals associated with agricultural and land-use activities will have a consistent, credible global benchmark. This addresses a long-standing gap in climate accounting, as land use — including agriculture and land-use change — accounts for an estimated quarter of global emissions but has lacked harmonised reporting rules.
The LSR Standard provides companies with detailed accounting requirements that cover both emissions from land and CO₂ removals, whether through natural processes or emerging technological solutions such as direct air capture and geological storage. It also includes robust safeguards to ensure that any removals reported are high-integrity and comparable across sectors and geographies.
Developed over a rigorous, multi-year consultation process involving more than 300 external reviewers and pilot testing by dozens of companies and partners, the new standard aims to bring greater transparency and confidence to climate reporting. It is expected to play a critical role as companies strengthen commitments to net-zero targets and integrate land-related impacts into their climate strategies.
As corporate sustainability disclosure frameworks and regulatory requirements continue to evolve globally, this new land sector guidance marks a significant step in standardising how emissions and removals from land activities are measured and communicated.
