New evidence from the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) reinforces the strategic importance of innovation in food and beverage packaging, as the sector continues to dominate material use and experience sustained growth in plastic packaging volumes.

According to the JRC analysis, food and beverages account for the overwhelming majority of packaging materials studied, while plastic packaging increased by 11% between 2011 and 2025. These trends underline the continued pressure on packaging systems and the growing need for scalable solutions in reuse, material efficiency, and recycling.

New EU Packaging Regulation Applies from 12 August 2026: PPWR Sets Binding Circularity Requirements

The Regulation introduces harmonised requirements on packaging design, recyclability, recycled content, reuse targets, and restrictions on certain substances, including PFAS in food-contact packaging. It marks a shift from fragmented national rules to a directly applicable EU-wide system aimed at accelerating the transition to circular packaging.

To support implementation, the European Commission has published a Guidance Document and a set of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) providing practical clarification on selected provisions of the Regulation.
