Salt-Tolerant Wheat Draws €5M as Climate-Resilient Crops Gain Ground

Sweden's OlsAro has raised €5 million to bring climate-resilient cereal genetics to market, starting with salt-tolerant wheat. Here is why resilient seeds are becoming a strategic priority.

At a glance: Sweden's OlsAro raised a €5 million seed round (announced 14 October 2026) | Its SeedAX platform combines genetics, data and AI-driven trait discovery | Salt-tolerant wheat showed up to 41% higher yields under saline conditions, and soil salinity affects around a tenth of the world's cropland.

As climate pressure mounts, the seed itself is becoming one of agriculture's most strategic technologies.

On 14 October 2026, the Gothenburg-based agtech company OlsAro announced a €5 million seed round to bring climate-resilient cereal genetics to market, a signal that investors increasingly see resilient crops as both a climate adaptation tool and a commercial opportunity.

The round was led by Industrifonden, with Nordic Foodtech VC as co-lead, and joined by existing backers including Future Food Fund, PINC, AgFunder and GU Ventures. It brings the company's total funding to about €7.5 million, following a €2.5 million pre-seed in April 2024.

From trait discovery to the field

At the centre of the company is SeedAX, a platform that combines genetics, data and AI-driven trait discovery to help seed companies develop stress-tolerant crop varieties faster. Its first commercial focus is salt-tolerant wheat, which the company plans to bring to market after international field trials, with further programmes planned for drought tolerance and nitrogen-use efficiency, and expansion into other cereals including rice.

The early results point to why this matters. In trials under saline conditions in Bangladesh, the company's salt-resilient wheat achieved up to 41% higher yields than a moderately salt-tolerant variety. That is a meaningful margin in a world where soil salinity already affects around a tenth of all cropland, degrading land that farmers can no longer use to its full potential.

Why it matters

Climate-resilient seeds sit at the intersection of several priorities that define the future of European agriculture: food security, climate adaptation, and sovereignty over genetic resources.

Varieties that can tolerate salt, drought or lower nitrogen inputs help farms stay productive on stressed land, reduce dependency on inputs, and protect yields as growing conditions become less predictable.

For an innovation ecosystem like the one Agriventures supports, stories like this are a useful marker of where capital and science are heading. Resilient genetics, responsible biotechnology and the data platforms behind them are exactly the areas where European agri-food innovators can lead, provided they can move from promising trials to validated, field-ready products at scale.

The investment in OlsAro is a reminder that the market is increasingly willing to back that journey. The seed has always been where a harvest begins. Increasingly, it is also where resilience begins.

Biotechnology, Agri-Inputs and Biosecurity: Why the Future of Farming Needs a Wider Conversation in Sofia

Agriculture is undergoing a quiet transformation. Genomic tools, precision biological solutions, and new generations of crop protection and plant nutrition products are changing what is possible in the field and along the whole food chain. At the same time, the same advances raise questions that the sector is only beginning to ask. Who controls the genetic resources and seeds we depend on? How do we manage biosecurity when biological agents and genomic technologies can be used for more than...

Where Agrifood Biotech and Research Funding Is Actually Going in 2026

Basic research doesn't fund itself, and in agrifood, the gap between a promising lab result and a fundable project often comes down to knowing which of a dozen overlapping EU programmes to approach first. Food safety science, biotech platforms, and multi-country research consortia each follow their own funding logic, and 2026 has brought fresh calls across all three. Two Live Examples Worth Studying Safe-Agri, one of AgriVentures' active projects, is reinforcing the security assessment...

VerAgro launches a free self-assessment to help farms measure - and improve - their sustainability

"How sustainable is your farm?" It's a question most producers can answer instinctively, but rarely with hard numbers. A new Bulgarian startup wants to change that. VerAgro, a Bulgaria-based agtech startup, has launched a free online self-assessment that gives farms and processors a clear, structured picture of where they stand on sustainability — and what to do next. A 20-minute check-up for your farm The tool works like a health check-up for your operation. Farmers and processors answer 57...
