Six Farm Innovations Make TIME's Best Inventions of 2026

From light-activated seeds and UV-C crop-protection robots to fertiliser from recycled urine, six agriculture innovations made TIME's Best Inventions of 2026. Here is what they signal for the future of food.
At a glance: TIME's Best Inventions of 2026 features 300 products and ideas, judged on originality, efficacy, ambition and impact | Six of them come from agriculture | Together they map where agri-food innovation is heading: automation, biologicals, circular economy, pollinators and resilient genetics.
Every year, TIME's Best Inventions list offers a useful snapshot of the technologies the world is betting on. The 2026 edition spans 300 products and ideas, chosen for originality, efficacy, ambition and impact, and six of them come from agriculture. Read together, they are a short tour of the directions that matter most for the future of food.
The six agriculture winners
BioLumic xTraits. A platform that uses light to activate trait development in seeds, giving crops what TIME called "a stronger start." It points to a wider shift toward resilient genetics that help crops perform under climate pressure, without relying solely on conventional breeding timelines.
Burro Grande 44. Described by TIME as an "all-purpose farm robot," it carries harvested fruit from pickers to central collection points. The company says each picker becomes around 30% more productive, a direct response to the labour shortages and rising labour costs squeezing many farms.
Beewise Robi. An automated, AI-assisted beehive management system. By helping keep colonies healthy, it supports the pollination services that underpin a large share of global food production, and puts biodiversity at the centre of the innovation story.
2nd Nature AgWaste Portal. An AI platform that identifies commercially valuable compounds hidden in agricultural side streams and food-industry waste, what TIME summed up as "a second life for scraps." It is a clear example of the circular economy moving from principle to product.
Saga Robotics Thorvald. An autonomous robot that uses UV-C light to control powdery mildew in vineyards and other specialty crops, reducing reliance on conventional fungicides. In 2026 it is reportedly treating around 30% of UK tabletop strawberry production and roughly 2,500 acres of California vineyards.
VunaNexus Aurin. A fertiliser made from recycled human urine, or as TIME put it, "garden fertiliser from urine." Behind the striking description is a serious aim: more sustainable, locally recoverable sources of the nutrients crops depend on.
What stands out is not any single gadget, but the pattern. Autonomous robotics and automation, biological and light-based crop protection, circular use of waste streams, pollinator health and climate-resilient genetics are exactly the verticals where European agri-food innovators are building, and where investment is increasingly flowing. These are not distant moonshots. Several of the winners are already in commercial use on real farms.
This is the territory Agriventures works in every day: helping innovative solutions move from the lab and the pitch deck to adoption in the field. Lists like TIME's are a reminder that the appetite for practical, high-impact agri-food technology is strong, and that the task now is to help the best of it scale, including here in Europe.
The future of food will not arrive all at once. It will arrive invention by invention, farm by farm.

Biotechnology, Agri-Inputs and Biosecurity: Why the Future of Farming Needs a Wider Conversation in Sofia
Agriculture is undergoing a quiet transformation. Genomic tools, precision biological solutions, and new generations of crop protection and plant nutrition products are changing what is possible in the field and along the whole food chain. At the same time, the same advances raise questions that the sector is only beginning to ask. Who controls the genetic resources and seeds we depend on? How do we manage biosecurity when biological agents and genomic technologies can be used for more than...

Where Agrifood Biotech and Research Funding Is Actually Going in 2026
Basic research doesn't fund itself, and in agrifood, the gap between a promising lab result and a fundable project often comes down to knowing which of a dozen overlapping EU programmes to approach first. Food safety science, biotech platforms, and multi-country research consortia each follow their own funding logic, and 2026 has brought fresh calls across all three. Two Live Examples Worth Studying Safe-Agri, one of AgriVentures' active projects, is reinforcing the security assessment...

VerAgro launches a free self-assessment to help farms measure - and improve - their sustainability
"How sustainable is your farm?" It's a question most producers can answer instinctively, but rarely with hard numbers. A new Bulgarian startup wants to change that. VerAgro, a Bulgaria-based agtech startup, has launched a free online self-assessment that gives farms and processors a clear, structured picture of where they stand on sustainability — and what to do next. A 20-minute check-up for your farm The tool works like a health check-up for your operation. Farmers and processors answer 57...
