The Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol has unveiled a groundbreaking Land Sector and Removals Standard

New Global Rules Put Land Emissions on the Climate Reporting Map
The Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol has unveiled a groundbreaking Land Sector and Removals Standard, bringing long-overdue clarity to how companies measure and report emissions tied to land use. Starting January 1, 2027, land-based emissions and carbon removals will officially become part of mainstream corporate climate reporting.
The new standard shines a spotlight on agriculture, forestry, and land-use change — sectors responsible for a significant share of global emissions but often overlooked in corporate disclosures. For the first time, companies will also need to consistently account for carbon removals, whether through nature-based solutions or emerging technologies like direct air capture.
What the Standard Covers
Under the new framework, companies must now:
Quantify and report GHG emissions from land use, land-use change, and land management.
Account for CO₂ removals stored in terrestrial and geological carbon pools.
Include biogenic emissions from products across their value chains.
Incorporate emerging removal technologies (e.g., direct air capture) into corporate inventories.
By setting clear, globally aligned rules, the GHG Protocol aims to boost the credibility, transparency, and comparability of net-zero claims worldwide.
In this context, a webinar was held to explore this topic.
On January 30, GHG Protocol launched the Land Sector and Removals (LSR) Standard, establishing the first global benchmark for corporate accounting of land-based emissions and CO₂ removals, including those from agricultural land use and emerging technologies like direct air capture. With land use responsible for nearly a quarter of global emissions, the Standard fills a long-standing gap in credible corporate GHG reporting. This webinar walks through what the Standard includes and how companies across sectors can use it to track progress and disclose climate impacts with confidence.
The Land Sector and Removals Standard Launch Webinar introduced a new framework designed to strengthen transparency and consistency in accounting for land-based emissions and removals. The session outlined the objectives of the standard, its key principles, and how it supports credible climate reporting across the land sector. Speakers discussed practical applications, alignment with existing climate initiatives, and what the standard means for organizations involved in land use, forestry, and agriculture. The webinar also highlighted next steps for adoption and engagement, setting the stage for more robust and comparable land-sector climate action.

International online event on Circular agrifood opportunities for funding. Circular Voices
Europe’s agri-food sector is entering a decisive decade. Rising resource pressures, climate volatility, supply chain instability and shifting consumer expectations are forcing companies, researchers and policymakers to rethink how food systems operate. The linear model of production, consumption and waste is no longer economically or environmentally sustainable. The question is no longer whether circularity will become central to agri-food systems. The question is who will lead the transition....
