UP4F Online Working Groups: Accelerating Collaboration for the Future of Upcycled Food

The transition towards a more sustainable food system requires more than innovative technologies—it depends on effective collaboration across the entire value chain.
Recognizing this, the UPcycled4Food (UP4F) Initiative has established a series of online working groups designed to bring together industry leaders, researchers, retailers, food manufacturers, and other stakeholders to address the key challenges preventing upcycled food from becoming mainstream.
The online working groups represent an important step in transforming the food industry from a linear production model into a circular ecosystem, where valuable food side streams are no longer viewed as waste but as resources for creating nutritious, high-quality food products. Through structured collaboration, participants work together to identify practical solutions that can be implemented across the sector, helping to create stronger market demand for upcycled ingredients and products.
Unlike traditional networking events, the UP4F working groups are built around focused, pre-competitive collaboration. This approach allows organizations to openly discuss common challenges, exchange expertise, and jointly develop solutions without compromising their competitive positions. By working collectively on industry-wide barriers, participants can accelerate innovation while reducing duplication of effort.
A central objective of the initiative is to increase market confidence in upcycled food. Although the sector has seen significant technological progress in recent years, widespread adoption remains limited due to uncertainties surrounding quality standards, sustainability claims, consumer acceptance, procurement practices, and regulatory frameworks.
The working groups address these issues by developing shared knowledge, improving transparency, and identifying practical tools that support informed decision-making throughout the food value chain. Each working group focuses on a specific product category or strategic topic where upcycled ingredients have strong commercial potential. Discussions explore opportunities for integrating circular ingredients into existing product portfolios, identifying sourcing challenges, improving product development processes, and creating scalable business cases. By involving stakeholders from different parts of the supply chain, the initiative ensures that solutions reflect both technical feasibility and real market needs.
An equally important aspect of the programme is the creation of common methodologies for evaluating the environmental, nutritional, and economic value of upcycled ingredients.
Establishing trusted assessment frameworks can help manufacturers, retailers, investors, and food service providers make evidence-based decisions while increasing consumer trust in products containing upcycled ingredients. Shared metrics also support sustainability reporting and contribute to broader environmental goals by demonstrating the positive impact of circular food production.
The collaborative nature of the UP4F Initiative reflects a growing recognition that no single organization can solve the challenges of food system transformation alone. Innovation often succeeds when knowledge, expertise, and practical experience are combined across sectors. Through regular online sessions, participants are encouraged to share best practices, discuss emerging trends, and identify opportunities for joint projects that can accelerate the commercialization of innovative food solutions.
The initiative also supports companies seeking to position themselves within the rapidly growing circular economy.

Through this platform, users can now explore and get inspired how circular practices are being implemented across different contexts, crops, and farming systems. It brings together real examples of farms that are already:
closing loops
reducing waste
regenerating soil
creating value from by-products
As sustainability becomes increasingly important for consumers, policymakers, and investors, businesses are looking for practical pathways to reduce food waste while creating new value from existing resources. The UP4F working groups provide a structured environment where organizations can better understand market developments, strengthen partnerships, and contribute to shaping future industry standards.
Ultimately, the success of food upcycling depends not only on technological innovation but also on building confidence across the entire food ecosystem. Manufacturers need reliable ingredient suppliers, retailers need credible sustainability claims, consumers need transparency, and policymakers require robust evidence to support regulatory development. By bringing these perspectives together, the UP4F online working groups help create the conditions necessary for upcycled food to move from niche innovation to mainstream adoption.
As the global food industry continues to pursue more sustainable production models, collaborative initiatives such as UPcycled4Food demonstrate how collective action can drive meaningful change. Through knowledge sharing, practical cooperation, and a shared commitment to circular food systems, the initiative is helping establish the foundations for a more resilient, resource-efficient, and sustainable future for food.

Agriventures Joins SYSARM: Helping Europe’s Farmers
Every farmer already knows how to manage risk day to day — weather, prices, supply chains, you name it. What most don’t have is a way to see how all of those risks connect, and how a decision made today can come back to bite (or help) them two seasons from now. That’s the gap SYSARM is here to close, and Agriventures has just signed on as a core partner to help make it happen. On 27–28 May, our team — represented by Ivaylo Yankov — joined partners from Italy, Romania, Bulgaria and Poland in...
