Urgent Action Needed as New Report Warns of Global Food Security Risks

A new report from the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) and Anglia Ruskin University has warned that urgent intervention is needed to protect global food security, as climate change, biodiversity loss and geopolitical instability place growing pressure on food systems worldwide.
Published on 30 April 2026, the report says environmental decline is already weakening agriculture through soil degradation, water shortages and ecosystem damage. These pressures are reducing crop yields, raising prices and making food supplies less reliable.
Researchers also highlighted the risk of sudden shocks to supply chains. The Strait of Hormuz, a major route for fertiliser exports, was identified as a critical vulnerability. Any disruption there could delay planting seasons, reduce harvests and increase food inflation across global markets.
The report warns that ecological tipping points could further destabilise production. Continued damage to the Amazon rainforest may disrupt rainfall systems that support farming, while the decline of pollinators threatens crops such as fruits, vegetables and oilseeds. Marine ecosystems are also under pressure, raising concerns over falling fish stocks.
Authors say food insecurity should now be treated not only as a humanitarian or environmental issue, but as a serious economic risk. Supply shortages and rising prices could fuel inflation, disrupt trade and increase political instability.
To address the threat, the report calls for stronger protection of nature, more resilient supply chains and greater investment in sustainable agriculture. It also urges governments and financial institutions to factor environmental risks into long-term planning.

The study concludes that without coordinated global action, food shortages and price shocks could become more frequent in the years ahead.
The warnings in the latest food security report highlight the urgent need for innovation, resilience and investment across the agricultural sector.
The role of Agriventures in supporting agrifood innovation
As Europe’s agritech startup ecosystem continues to expand, initiatives like Agriventures help connect entrepreneurs, researchers, investors and policymakers working to modernise agriculture and food production. By supporting agrifood startups and biotechnology innovation, Agriventures can help accelerate solutions to some of the challenges identified in the report, including lower crop productivity, environmental stress and supply chain vulnerability. Its focus on access to European agricultural funding is also significant at a time when greater investment is needed in sustainable farming, resource efficiency and food system resilience. Startups developing precision agriculture tools, climate-smart farming systems, alternative proteins, water-saving technologies and pollinator-friendly solutions may all contribute to strengthening future food security.
Agriventures focuses on supporting agrifood startups, biotechnology innovation, and access to European funding for agriculture, while also helping entrepreneurs navigate the complex landscape of startup financing, venture capital, and research commercialization.
By strengthening connections between startups, research institutions, investors, and farmers, Agriventures contributes to building a stronger agricultural innovation ecosystem that can accelerate the transition toward sustainable agriculture and resilient food systems.
Through knowledge sharing, events, and ecosystem building, Agriventures helps ensure that promising agritech innovations can scale and reach farmers, food producers, and global markets.
