Why Healthy Soils Matter More Than Ever — And Why Farmers Should Join the Mission Soil Investment Forum

For many farmers, soil is the most valuable asset on the farm. But across Europe, soils are under pressure from erosion, drought, compaction, loss of organic matter and rising production costs. At the same time, farmers are being asked to produce more food while reducing environmental impact.
This is exactly why the new Mission Soil Investment Forum, organised under the EU Mission “A Soil Deal for Europe”, is becoming an important event for the future of agriculture.
The forum focuses on practical solutions, investments and business opportunities linked to healthy soils and sustainable farming.
Healthy soil is not only about the environment. It directly affects: crop yields, water retention, fertiliser efficiency, fuel consumption, drought resistance, and long-term farm profitability.
Farmers already see the effects of degraded soils: fields drying faster, hard compacted layers, weaker root systems, lower organic matter, increasing fertiliser costs, and unstable yields during extreme weather.
The European Commission now considers healthy soils essential for food security,
climate resilience and the future competitiveness of European agriculture.
Many farmers think such events are only for researchers or politicians. In reality, the forum is designed to connect farmers, investors, businesses and policymakers around practical farming solutions.
Participation can help farmers: learn about new funding opportunities, discover profitable soil-improving practices, meet technology providers and researchers, build partnerships and prepare for future EU agricultural policies.
The forum also focuses on creating real business models around soil health — meaning practices that are not only environmentally beneficial, but economically sustainable for farms.
In the coming years, buyers, food companies and financial institutions are expected to pay more attention to soil management practices.
Farmers who improve soil health may gain advantages such as:
better access to sustainability schemes,
stronger market positioning,
lower input dependency,
improved carbon farming opportunities,
and easier access to future green financing.
The EU Mission Soil initiative plans to establish 100 Living Labs and Lighthouses by 2030 to test and demonstrate practical soil solutions in real farming conditions.
This means farmers will increasingly become part of innovation networks instead of simply following regulations.
The direction of European agriculture is becoming clearer: farms with resilient, biologically active and well-managed soils will be better prepared for future climate, market and policy challenges. Healthy soils are no longer just an environmental topic. They are becoming a financial, strategic and competitive advantage. Farmers who start improving soils today may reduce costs, stabilise yields and create stronger businesses for the next generation.

Agriventures Joins SYSARM: Helping Europe’s Farmers
Every farmer already knows how to manage risk day to day — weather, prices, supply chains, you name it. What most don’t have is a way to see how all of those risks connect, and how a decision made today can come back to bite (or help) them two seasons from now. That’s the gap SYSARM is here to close, and Agriventures has just signed on as a core partner to help make it happen. On 27–28 May, our team — represented by Ivaylo Yankov — joined partners from Italy, Romania, Bulgaria and Poland in...
