Can Public Funding Pay for Your Prototype?

Yes, and most founders do not know it
Public money can pay for a prototype, a field trial or a first pilot with a customer. Yet 8 out of 10 agri-food startups don't know this funding exists for their stage. They either skip public funding entirely or chase famous programmes that were never meant for them.
Teodora Grigorova, founder of The Good Club, only found out her prototype was fundable when AgriVentures showed her the calls she qualified for. Read her story.
Below are the calls worth your time this autumn: what each one pays for, how much, and who should not bother applying. All deadlines are checked as of 10 October 2026.

The calls worth your time this autumn
1. EIT Food Proof-of-Concept Co-Financing Instrument
This is the most direct answer to "can public money pay for my pilot?" EIT Food covers up to €60,000 of a proof-of-concept or small pilot run together with a corporate client, for up to 12 months. The final cut-off is 30 November 2026.
It fits startups that already have a food or agri company willing to test their product. If you don't have that partner yet, this call is not for you this round.

2. EIC Accelerator
Europe's flagship instrument for single startups and SMEs pays a grant of up to €2.5 million, with optional equity from €1 to 10 million. It targets innovations that are already validated, roughly TRL 6 to 8.
Timing matters here. You first submit a short proposal, which is evaluated in about 4 to 6 weeks. Only a GO lets you submit the full proposal, and the first 2027 cut-off is 3 February. To make it, aim to send your short proposal by late November.
It is competitive: at the October 2025 cut-off, about 6.6% of full proposals were funded. A clear eligibility picture before you start saves months.

3. EIT Food Seedbed Venture Catalyst
Seedbed funds early agri-food ventures over six months, with a €480,000 pool and cut-offs on 4 November, 16 December and 27 January. Read the fine print: it is open only to startup teams created by the Venture Builders inside the Seedbed programme. It is not an open call for any startup.
4. Horizon Europe Cluster 6, as a consortium partner
Cluster 6 is the main EU budget for food, agriculture and bioeconomy research. The 2026 deadlines closed in September, but the 2027 calls run until September 2027. Startups rarely lead these projects; they join a consortium as the partner who brings the technology or the field test.
The time to get invited is now, while coordinators are building their teams. You will need a PIC number and the right introductions.
5. EIT Food Accelerator Network 2027
In 2026, the top three startups in each of six hubs received up to €53,000 for tech validation. That call closed in April. EIT Food is already selecting the hubs for 2027-2028, so if it follows the same timing, the next startup call should open in spring 2027. Prepare your validation data now.
Which one fits your stage?
The right call depends less on how good your idea is and more on where your company stands today. Use this as a first filter.
The most common mistake we see is applying to the biggest call instead of the best-fitting one. Each call scores you against its own criteria, and missing one of them ends the application before anyone reads your idea.
Know where you stand before you write a word
AgriVentures screens EU and global funding for agri-food only, matches calls to your company from your website, and scores your eligibility against each call's real criteria. You see your gaps before you spend weeks on an application.

Biotechnology, Agri-Inputs and Biosecurity: Why the Future of Farming Needs a Wider Conversation in Sofia
Agriculture is undergoing a quiet transformation. Genomic tools, precision biological solutions, and new generations of crop protection and plant nutrition products are changing what is possible in the field and along the whole food chain. At the same time, the same advances raise questions that the sector is only beginning to ask. Who controls the genetic resources and seeds we depend on? How do we manage biosecurity when biological agents and genomic technologies can be used for more than...

Where Agrifood Biotech and Research Funding Is Actually Going in 2026
Basic research doesn't fund itself, and in agrifood, the gap between a promising lab result and a fundable project often comes down to knowing which of a dozen overlapping EU programmes to approach first. Food safety science, biotech platforms, and multi-country research consortia each follow their own funding logic, and 2026 has brought fresh calls across all three. Two Live Examples Worth Studying Safe-Agri, one of AgriVentures' active projects, is reinforcing the security assessment...

VerAgro launches a free self-assessment to help farms measure - and improve - their sustainability

VerAgro, a Bulgaria-based agtech startup, has launched a free online self-assessment that gives farms and processors a clear, structured picture of where they stand on sustainability — and what to do next. A 20-minute check-up for your farm The tool works like a health check-up for your operation. Farmers and processors answer 57...

A New Door Is Opening for Bulgarian Farmers and Agri-Innovators - And It's Fully Funded
For years, the biggest barrier between Bulgarian agriculture and Europe's most advanced farms hasn't been ambition. It's been access — to the right rooms, the right people, and the budget to get there. AgriVentures' new Missions program was built to remove exactly that barrier, and it does it in a way few programs in the region ever have: by covering the full cost of getting Bulgarian farmers, entrepreneurs, scientists, and companies in front of Europe's leading agri-food innovators. If you...

Understanding Biomass Flows in Europe: A €6M Horizon Europe Call Agrifood Founders Shouldn't Miss
A question we've been getting a lot lately, including from our own LinkedIn community, is some version of: "Can my startup actually apply for this, and how?" This time it's about Understanding biomass flows in Europe (HORIZON-CL6-2026-01-CIRCBIO-05), a Horizon Europe call with a total budget of €6,000,000 that opened on 17 April 2026 and closes on 17 September 2026. It's exactly the kind of opportunity worth breaking down properly, because the honest answer is "yes, but not the way most...
