Pioneering Sustainable Farming with Nitrogen-Fixing Biostimulants

The Global Challenge

By 2050, the world will need to produce around 70% more food to feed an estimated 9 billion people. Yet, climate change is making farming harder: rising temperatures, shifting ecosystems, invasive pests, and frequent extreme weather events all threaten crop yields, grain quality, and livestock productivity.

At the same time, the overuse of synthetic fertilizers, especially nitrogen-based ones, has led to soil degradation, biodiversity loss, water contamination, and greenhouse gas emissions. While agribusiness has traditionally been slow to adopt sustainable practices, recent years have seen a growing shift toward eco-friendly solutions.

The Enthela Solution

Founded in 2023 by Martin Nedev and Angel Hristov, Enthela is a Bulgarian startup developing a biostimulant based on nitrogen-fixing bacteria. Their innovation allows farmers to reduce or even replace synthetic nitrogen fertilizers while maintaining yields.

Unlike many existing microbial products, which often fail under harsh soil conditions, Enthela is applying a tailored biotechnological method to enhance bacteria resilience. This ensures higher nitrogen availability for crops and makes microbial fertilizers a truly viable alternative.

Their mission is ambitious: to replace up to 50% of synthetic nitrogen fertilizers, reducing harmful run-off, protecting biodiversity, cutting emissions, and supporting farmers with more cost-efficient and sustainable tools.

Achievements So Far

  • Competitions & Accelerators: Enthela has already participated in and won several competitions and accelerator programs in Bulgaria, including Elevate by the American University in Bulgaria.

  • Awards: In 2024, they were named Best Youth Startup in Bulgaria by the Fund of Funds and Sofia University, and also received the Innovation Champion Award by The Recursive.

  • Funding Raised: With the support of Agriventures, Enthela has successfully raised over €50,000 to advance its research and development efforts.

  • Strategic Partnerships: Enthela recently became one of the first practical spin-offs in Bulgaria with UCTM (University of Chemical Technology and Metallurgy), partnering with leading scientists in biotechnology. They also attracted young researchers to their team and gained international expertise through consultants from Portugal, with experience in microbial fertilizer startups in Israel and Portugal.

Current Stage and Roadmap

Enthela is currently in the R&D phase, with key milestones ahead:

  1. Laboratory Enhancement: Strengthen nitrogen-fixing bacteria’s resilience under soil conditions.

  2. Small-Scale Testing: Validate effectiveness compared to conventional microbial fertilizers.

  3. Seed Funding Round: Raise capital to finance field trials with established agricultural partners in Europe.

  4. Scaling Partnerships: Collaborate with international stakeholders, including TUM Venture Labs in Germany and an organic fertilizer company in the Netherlands, to expand research and testing.

Measuring Impact

Enthela is committed to delivering measurable sustainability benefits. Planned metrics include:

  • Nitrogen contamination levels in groundwater.

  • Levels of vaporized nitrogen under different fertilizer treatments.

  • Microbiome diversity analysis in treated vs. untreated soils.

These indicators will demonstrate both environmental and economic impact, providing data to guide future scaling.

The Role of Agriventures

As a member of Agriventures, Enthela benefits from the cluster’s:

  • Networking opportunities within the European agrifood and biotech ecosystem.

  • Strategic mentoring on funding applications and market positioning.

  • Visibility support through events and partnerships.

  • Direct assistance in fundraising, helping the startup secure more than €50,000 to date.

By connecting Enthela with research institutions, investors, and accelerators, Agriventures has played a crucial role in accelerating the company’s journey from concept to recognized innovator.

Looking Ahead

Enthela’s vision is bold but clear: to prove that microbial fertilizers can be effective, scalable, and transformative for the global food system. With strong partnerships, growing recognition, and ecosystem support, Enthela is well on its way to becoming a leading player in sustainable agri-biotechnology.

🌱 Enthela shows how young innovators in Bulgaria, backed by collaborative clusters like Agriventures, can create technologies that help feed the planet while protecting the environment.
